Social media can quickly and easily help your business gain important visibility and exposure to hundreds if not thousands of potential customers. Having been immersed in social media marketing for three years now I’ve discovered a big reason that it works so well for so many businesses …it’s really fun!
You see, the bottom line is that people (your customers and prospects) like to be informed and entertained. So, one of the big secrets that I’ve learned is that social media is not all about ‘your business’ and what you sell! It’s about connecting with people on a level that they don’t feel intimidated and harassed!
Here’s the best advice I can give you on social media. If you set out to inform and entertain people, giving them some useful and beneficial information, you will build more relationships. Letting customers and prospective customers get to know you better so that when they’re ready to buy, you’ll be the first one they turn to – just like Gerry turned to me for coaching!
People generally don’t go to Facebook, YouTube, or blogs to read (or watch) long whitepapers of what makes your business tick and to discover how smart you are! A big secret to why some businesses are more successful with social media marketing is that they ‘get it’ that their customers and prospects are not always interested in “business stuff” and being sold!
Social media is very similar to newsletter marketing, of which I am quite the expert! What I teach my clients is that the content you provide needs to be informative, enlightening, and entertaining, with an emphasis on entertaining.
Please do not over-engineer this!
Just like your customer newsletter, social media is not the place to always push content that proves how much you know about whatever it is you do! If people sense that you’re only there to sell, they will leave you in a big hurry!
But Wait! Social Media Can Help You Sell!!
My ‘big picture’ answer of how social media marketing can help you sell is that people buy from people they know, like, and trust. I’m sure that you’ve heard that expression many times before but it’s true. Social media doesn’t necessarily sell anything; it helps bring people together and helps them get to know each other.
Social media brings together businesses and customers by helping them to develop healthier, stronger, and more beneficial (profitable) relationships.
At its core, social media is a relationship tool, and relationships are what great marketing is all about. Plus, when you entertain and connect with your customers and prospects in a social media format, they’ll often share your information with others!
Social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook make it super easy to share. On Facebook you can “like” something and Tweets can quickly and easily be “Re-Tweeted” with the click of a button. And people can post comments to your videos, creating social proof, and they can also be easily shared with others.
In the print newsletter world that’s the equivalent of someone writing a comment on your newsletter and then mailing it to a friend! It’s nice when it happens but with social media it happens instantly. Are you starting to see how powerful this can be?

In my opinion, a company blog should be the main focus of your social media marketing campaign. Blogging has many benefits but the main reason for regularly posting information to your blog is to connect with customers and prospects so you can inform, educate, and entertain them (remember that from above?!)
Another semi-unrelated but quite still beneficial point of blogging is that regularly posting to a blog helps with search engine optimization (SEO). Without getting too technical here, search engines love fresh content and so when you post new information to your blog, the search engines keep coming back to take a look and this helps with your web site ranking. That’s as technical as I dare get here!
While blogging is a good strategy in and of itself, they become even more powerful when you use Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn to promote your blog!

For example, if you were a business coach or consultant and you selected an article on how to to make annual reviews less stressful, the lead in sentence you add to the beginning of the ‘ready-to-go’ article may sound something like this: "As entrepreneurs and small business owners we all know how stressful annual reviews can be. Here are three tips to help you make this not only less stressful, but more productive, enjoy!"
Step #3: You add a closing sentence that includes a link to your web site and/or other contact information. Your closing sentence may sound something like this: “If you’d like additional information on hiring or would like to speak to me about our recruiting services, please feel free to call me at 1230456-7890 or email me, email@you.com."
Step #4: You post this ready to go article to your blog!
Step #5: The next step is to promote your blog post! To do this you use the pre-written announcements of your new blog post and let the world know via Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. That’s right; we have already written these “announcements" for you and they’re listed on the Action Template!
Step #6: Shoot a quick video! If you’re using video (a great idea), you then use the video script to record your video! Let me show you how easy this can be! If it was me using the article I just mentioned above, this is what my video would look like!
Step #7: Create an Email blast! You may also choose to send the article as part of an email blast to alert your list about this news. You can either simply alert the people on your email list to the blog post or provide a link to your blog, or, a smarter way would be to send the article in the body of the mail. The power of social media marketing is hitting customers and prospects on several fronts. Not everyone on your email list is following you on Twitter and vice versa.
Step #7A: Create an additional auto-responder! You can also take the email that we just did and turn it into an auto-responder. If you’re not familiar with auto-responders they are pre-written emails that are pre-scheduled to be distributed to people that sign up to your email list. Writing a series of auto-responders can be a challenge, but not anymore!
Step #8: Create a podcast! If you are into podcasting, you can use the audio from your video and add this to your podcasting library!
If for some reason you cannot find an article that you believe would appeal to your readers and followers (not likely!), the No Hassle Social Media System gives you two more options!
